Boeing has applied for a patent of specific metal injection molding technology in America, and the patent number is 20120237385. That metal injection molding technology doesn’t need plastic binders, which resolves the problems caused by the remaining binders.
In the process of conventional metal injection molding, the feedstock is comprised of fine metal powders and plastic binders, and the ratio always is 2:8. The mixed feedstock is injected into a mould to form the devised shapes. And then it’s subjected to debinding and sintering to eliminate the binders, and densifies and gives it final geometry. However, the parts are complex, which are difficult to be debinded, and then affects the accuracy of dimension, surface and mechanical properties.
The new metal injection molding technology kicks the debinding process out, which results in a cheaper and simpler metal injection molding; also improve the accuracy of dimension, surface roughness, and mechanical properties. Besides, it makes the processing more flexible in designing of geometry.
