Powder metallurgy could be used to make geometrically complex gears. But the material should be determined carefully according to required properties for gears, and then could make these gears work well.
While machining is used for PM shaped parts, it could improve their strength by around 10 percent. The accuracy of PM while used for gears depends on expansion parameter and the accuracy of toolings. Normally the accuracy of gears with diameters of less than 50 mm is around grade 8, while using domestic toolings, and it will be grade 7 while using imported toolings. It will be better while used for helical gears. Powder metallurgy could achieve a great uniformity while used for gears.
General gears made by powder metallurgy could bear a torque of 14NM, and warm pressing could reach 20NM. At the meantime, while designing according to powder metallurgy on the whole set of gears, the weight could be reduced by around 30 percent, while allowing fine finishing.
